Review: Leah on the Offbeat

Leah on the Offbeat Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5⭐. While I really enjoyed getting back to our characters and seeing them from a new POV, there wasn't really any more to this book than a small slice-of-life snapshot of the end of senior year at Creekwood. It was nice to experience everyone's college decisions, but that was about it.
I did like getting a look inside Leah's head, but I couldn't really connect with her angsty/angry teen vibe. I did relate with her awkwardness and I loved hearing about her fanart (Nina & Inej shoutout! so many anime namedrops! ;] ). All her emotions felt very real, I just never knew what to expect next from her and didn't really understand half her decisions.
It was still a charming book, though, and I liked exploring her relationship with Abby.

Review: Unfit to Print

Unfit to Print Unfit to Print by K.J. Charles
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"It was that once upon a time the world had been full of possibility and excitement and wonder, and now it held difficulty and years of toil to come, and defeat after inevitable defeat. And yet here they were, Vikram and Gil, once again making themselves a space in which they could, perhaps, be happy."

Another great KJ Charles story! Just a novella, so it's not as fleshed out plot-wise as I hoped, but I still enjoyed the new characters :)

This is a Victorian murder mystery of sorts, in which British-bred lawyer Vikram Pandey is investigating the disappearance of a poor Indian boy. This leads him to a long-lost friend from school, half-black bookseller and erotica writer Gil Lawless. As always, I appreciate KJ's inclusion of diverse characters, and I think she does it well without over-focusing on that.

Gil and Vik's relationship was well fleshed out for a novella, due in part to their shared history at boarding school. They also have their differences of opinion - Vikram doesn't approve of Gil's profession, etc - and the arguments/compromises make them feel more human than if they got along smoothly.

Thanks to the author for sending me an ARC!
